April: Autism Awareness Month
April is Autism Awareness Month; a time to raise awareness for the estimated 1 in 68 children, adults and their families who are affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders.
According to The Arc’s Autism Now center, Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are defined as “a range of neurodevelopmental disorders that significantly impact communication and social skills and are evidenced by restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests or activities.” However, the definition of ASD is evolving and may vary depending on who is explaining ASD. Individuals on the autism spectrum may thrive on routine, have trouble with nonverbal social interactions, struggle to make eye contact, experience language difficulties, have sensory issues and more.
