When it comes to fundamental life skills like learning how to budget and plan finances, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) often struggle. Not only do they and their families often navigate disability services funding waivers, but more than 75 percent of special needs adults are without employment. Additionally, households containing at least one family member with a disability are also marked by the highest poverty rate, while families report that they are very concerned about how to provide long-term for their dependents with special needs.
The Arc Pikes Peak Region, a Colorado Springs-based disability advocacy organization, is working to change such statistics, through our advocacy and education programs, and through our inclusive personal development center, Building for Change (take a virtual tour here). From inclusive budgeting and financial planning classes, to our Pooled Income Trust (learn more here), we are helping to create a more solid financial future for people with disabilities and their families.
Rosie, one of The Arc PPR’s 2021 Achiever of the Year award recipients, chose to change the direction of her financial life by taking the step to learn how to manage money.
“My achievement this year is learning how to handle money,” Rosie said.
Like Rosie, people with I/DD can learn how to best manage their finances – making them less vulnerable to financial struggles and poverty.
You can partner with The Arc PPR to create innovative budgeting and financial classes for individuals and families impacted by I/DD, by donating to The Arc PPR through Indy Give, a local year-end giving campaign that gives back to worthy nonprofits in our community! Your donation will help individuals and families find the information they need to make great financial decisions, all in a welcoming and inclusive space. And, when you donate through Indy Give!, you can also qualify to earn amazing rewards! You can give through 12/31/21 here: www.indygive.com/arc.
